As a division of IBTS, a not-for-profit governmental organization, DCIBTS has an ongoing responsibility to support initiatives that provide a public service in the areas of:

• Advancement of Building Safety
• Advancement of Affordable Housing
• Research and Education

DCIBTS's contribution to these areas may take the form of educational forums, development of guidebooks, videos or other educational materials. Projects may also include research, development of standards or software to support affordable housing or building safety. IBTS also works towards increasing better understanding of issues and implementation of programs among local, state and Federal government offices.
